FAQ

What causes weight loss as we age?

How do I know if my bodyweight changes?

If there are less calories than muscle mass, then weight loss is possible. This means that daily energy needs must be greater than the calories consumed. A decreased level of activity is the main cause of weight loss. You can also lose weight due to stress, illness, pregnancy, hormonal imbalances and certain medications. A person who has more fat than their muscle mass will experience weight gain. It occurs when people consume more calories per day than they need. The most common causes are overeating, increased activity, hormonal changes, and excessive calories.

Our bodies lose weight because we eat fewer calories than we burn. The main reason we lose weight is because we exercise more often. This increases our metabolism rate and burns more calories each day. But this doesn't guarantee that we'll lose weight. All that matters is whether we're losing weight or gaining muscles. We will lose weight if we burn more calories than we consume. But, if we consume far more calories than what we burn, then we actually store them as fat.

As we get older, our movement speed slows down and so we move less. We also tend eat less than we used to. Also, we are more likely to gain weight. On the flip side, we tend to have more muscle mass so we look bigger than we really are.

Without weighing yourself each week, there is no way to know how much weight you have lost. There are many ways to determine your weight. You can also measure your waist, hips or thighs. Some people prefer to use bathroom scales while others like to use tape measures.

To track your progress, weigh yourself once a week. Measure your waistline once per month. To see how far you have come, you can take photos of yourself every few month.

You can also find out how much you weigh by looking up your height and weight online. If you're tall at 5'10", and weigh 180lbs, your weight would be 180.

What is the difference between fat and sugar?

Fat is an important energy source, which comes from food. Sugar is a sweet substance that can be found naturally in fruits or vegetables. Both fats and sugars provide the same number of calories. Fats however, have more calories than sugars.

The body stores fats and they can lead to obesity. They cause cholesterol buildup which can lead to strokes and heart attacks.

Sugars are quickly absorbed and provide instant energy. This causes blood glucose levels to rise. High blood sugar levels can cause type II diabetes.

What should I eat?

You should eat lots of vegetables and fruits. These vegetables and fruits are rich in vitamins and minerals that will keep your immune system strong. Fruits and veggies are also high in fiber, which makes them filling and helps with digestion. You should eat at least five servings per day of fruit or veg.

You should also drink lots of water. Water flushes toxins from the body and gives you a full feeling between meals. Drink about eight glasses each day.

Choose whole grains over refined grains. Whole grains retain all nutrients including B vitamins, iron and zinc as well as calcium, magnesium, calcium, protein, and magnesium. Refined grains have been stripped of some of their nutrition.

Sugary drinks should be avoided. Sugary drinks have empty calories and are a major contributor to obesity. Instead, drink water, milk, or unsweetened Tea.

Avoid fast food. Fast food is low in nutritional value. It may taste great but it won't give you the energy you need to function properly. Use healthier options, such as soups, sandwiches, salads, and pasta.

Try to limit alcohol intake. Alcohol contains empty calories and contributes to poor nutrition. Limit your intake to two alcoholic drinks per week.

Red meat consumption should be reduced. Red meats are high-in saturated fat and cholesterol. Instead, choose lean cuts of beef and pork, lamb, chicken or fish.

Exercise: Good or Bad for Immunity?

Exercise is good for your immune system. When you exercise, your body produces white blood cells which fight off infections. Your body also removes toxins. Exercise helps to prevent heart disease and cancer. It reduces stress.

Exercising too often can cause your immune system to be weaker. Your muscles can become sore if you exercise too much. This can lead to inflammation and swelling. The body then needs to make more antibodies to fight infection. Problem is, extra antibodies can trigger allergies and other autoimmune conditions.

So, don't overdo it!

What does the term "vitamins" mean?

Vitamins are organic substances found naturally in food. Vitamins allow us to absorb nutrients from food. Vitamins cannot come from the body so food must provide them.

There are two types if vitamins: water soluble, and fat soluble. Water-soluble vitamins dissolve easily when they are dissolved in water. Some examples include vitamin C,B1 and B2 vitamins (thiamine), B2 and riboflavin, B3 and B6 vitamins (niacin), folic acids, biotin, pantothenic acids, and cholesterol. Fat-soluble vitamins can be stored in the liver or in fatty tissue. Vitamin D, E, K and A are some examples.

Vitamins are classified according their biological activity. There are eight major groups of vitamins:

  • A - Essential for healthy growth and health maintenance.
  • C - important for proper nerve function and energy production.
  • D - essential for healthy bones, teeth, and gums.
  • E is necessary for good vision, reproduction.
  • K - required for healthy muscles and nerves.
  • P – vital for building strong bones.
  • Q - Aids digestion and iron absorption
  • R is required for the production of red blood cells.

The recommended daily allowance (RDA), for vitamins, varies depending upon age, gender, or physical condition. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has established the RDA values.

For adults over 19 years, the RDA is 400 mg per day for vitamin A. Because it is essential for the development of the fetus, pregnant women should consume 600 micrograms per daily. Children ages 1-8 require 900 micrograms per day. Infants under one year of age require 700 micrograms per day, but this amount decreases to 500 micrograms per day between 9 months and 12 months of age.

Children ages 1-18years who are obese need 800 micrograms per day while those who are overweight need 1000 micrograms per day and children who are underweight need 1200 micrograms per day to meet their nutritional needs.

Children between 4 and 8 years old with anemia will need 2200 micrograms daily of vitamin C.

Adults over 50 years of age need 2000 micrograms per day for general health. Due to their increased nutrient needs, pregnant and breastfeeding women need 3000 micrograms daily.

1500 micrograms is the recommended daily intake for adults aged 70+, who lose approximately 10% of muscle each year.

Women who are pregnant or lactating need more than the RDA. Pregnant woman need 4000 micrograms daily in pregnancy, and 2500 per day after childbirth. Breastfeeding mothers need to consume 5000 micrograms every day when breastmilk has been produced.
